Every August, the world celebrates a special event—World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). Supported by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and various national health departments and civil society partners, this week aims to promote the importance of breastfeeding and provide necessary support to mothers.
Introduction to World Breastfeeding Week
Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure the health and survival of children. However, globally, only less than half of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed. Breast milk is rich in nutrients and antibodies that enhance the baby's immune system and reduce the risk of illnesses. Additionally, breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits for mothers, aiding in postpartum recovery and reducing the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
Since the World Health Assembly approved a resolution in 2018, establishing World Breastfeeding Week as a crucial health promotion strategy, the themes have varied each year but consistently aim to create supportive environments for breastfeeding. These environments include community and workplace support, protective policies, and comprehensive information on the benefits and strategies of breastfeeding.
Review of Past Themes
- 2018 Theme: Emphasized the importance of helping mothers initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth. Skin-to-skin contact and suckling stimulate milk production, including colostrum, known as the baby’s “first vaccine,” which is extremely rich in nutrients and antibodies.
- 2019 Theme: Highlighted the importance of family-friendly policies to support breastfeeding and help parents nurture and bond with their children in the early stages of life. This includes at least 18 weeks of paid maternity leave and paid paternity leave to encourage shared parental responsibilities.
- 2023 Theme: Balancing breastfeeding and work! Over 500 million working women lack basic maternity protections in national laws. Only 20% of countries mandate paid breaks for breastfeeding or expressing milk and related facilities.
- 2024 Theme: "Closing the Gap: Support for All Breastfeeding Mothers." This theme celebrates all types of breastfeeding mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey, showcasing how families, society, communities, and healthcare workers can support every breastfeeding mother.
